Protocol for Opening the Brown House (Updated October 10,2025)
Arrive and open the house at least a half hour before the advertised open time. We should not be setting up when people are arriving.
Turn on all interior lights, as needed.
Turn the thermostat up, as needed.
Unlock all exterior doors that can be used as emergency exits.
Uncover the portrait of Giles & Lee in the south parlor & the painted picture of the house (currently in the dining room).
Put out all temporary “Open” signs with the two wooden ones on each side of First Avenue.
Check there is toilet paper in both WCs with at least one extra roll.
Ask where people learned of our Open House to help us with advertising.
In the case of a private rental, be sure to put out the “Private Event” sign.
Protocol for Leaving and Closing the Brown House (Updated October 10,2025)
The last person who leaves the house each day must:
Turn the thermostat down to 45. During winter cold spells, 55.
Perform a walk around to check there are no doors left unlocked. Someone, unknown to you, may have unlocked a door, so please check all doors.
Check there are no windows open. (See above)
Make certain all electric appliances are turned off.
Cover the portrait of Giles & Lee with their protective cover and the painted picture of the house with its protective cover.
Ensure all temporary signs and porch decorations are inside the house.
Turn off all interior lights on both floors.
With kitchen door closed, activate the security system as previously instructed
Go out the kitchen door, lock it.
