Rental Policies for Successful Events at the Brown House
The Brown House is a treasured historic property, and we are pleased to share it with our community for meaningful gatherings and special events. These policies are intended to help protect the house, ensure guest safety, and make your event enjoyable and successful.
Insurance Requirements
Prior to your event, renters must provide proof of liability insurance in the form of a Certificate of Insurance.
You can often get this Certificate from the agent that provides your Homeowner’s or Renter’s insurance.
The certificate must:
Provide liability coverage in the amount of $500,000
Show the specific date of your event
Name the “Santiam Heritage Foundationand their respective officers, directors, agents, and volunteers as “additional insureds.”
This requirement helps protect both the renter and the Foundation.
Alcohol Service
If alcohol will be served at your event, additional requirements apply.
Renters must:
Use a licensed alcohol server
Obtain Host Liquor Liability insurance
Provide proof of insurance showing the specific event date
Name the “Santiam Heritage Foundationand their respective officers, directors, agents, and volunteers as “additional insureds.”
Follow all applicable OLCC rules and regulations
As an alternative, you may choose to hire a caterer or alcohol service provider who can provide both the licensed server and the required insurance.

Because the Brown House is a historic property, we ask renters and guests to take special care when decorating.

Please do not use:
Tape Tacks Staples Nails Any hanging material that may damage walls, woodwork, furnishings, or finishes
Special hangers are available for use in the parlors. Other non-damaging hanging methods may also be used with approval. We recommend CommandTM hanging products.
Flowers and decorations
Floral arrangements should be prepared off-site and placed in containers that will not leak.
Open flames are not permitted, including candles and smoking. Battery-operated candles, lights, and similar decorative items are welcome.
The following may not be used inside the house or on the grounds:
Rice Confetti Birdseed Potpourri Glitter Similar loose materials
Flower petals are permitted, but they must be fully cleaned up at the end of the event.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in the Brown House or on the property grounds.
Guests who wish to smoke must do so at least 10 feet away from the property. Across the street is generally the easiest way to ensure smoking remains off the grounds.

Children are welcome at events, but they must be supervised by an adult at all times.
The supervising adult:
Must have child supervision as their primary responsibility during the event
May not be the person in charge of the event
May not be the person being honored at the event
This helps ensure both guest safety and protection of the historic property.
Pets and Service Animals
Pets are not permitted inside the Brown House. Service animals wearing their service vests are welcome.
Leashed animals may be permitted on the grounds. Any animal waste must be bagged and removed from the property.
Care of the Property
